Exporting Your Site
3 min read
Your site, your files
Everything Hands Free Sites creates for you is standard HTML, CSS, and images. There's no proprietary format, no special framework, no lock-in. Your website files work with any hosting provider on the planet.
This is a core principle: you own your website. We host it for you because it's convenient, not because we're holding it hostage.
What you get when you export
Your site files include:
- HTML pages — every page of your website as clean, standalone HTML files
- CSS stylesheets — all the styling that makes your site look the way it does
- Images — every image on your site
- Blog posts — if you have a blog, all posts as HTML pages
- Portfolio items — if you have a portfolio, all items as HTML pages
How to export your site
- Go to your site's detail page in the dashboard
- Click Export Site as ZIP
- Your files will be prepared in the background
- You'll receive an email with a download link (valid for 24 hours)
What happens after export?
Your site continues running on Hands Free Sites. Exporting is just getting a copy of your files — it doesn't affect your live site or cancel your hosting. You can export as many times as you like, on any plan.
Worth knowing: if you ever cancel, your site stays live for a 5-day grace period (reactivate in one click during that window), and after 5 days it's permanently removed from our hosting — it isn't kept or archived. So an exported copy is the thing you keep, and your domain stays yours either way.
If you want to move your site elsewhere:
- Export your files
- Upload them to your new hosting provider
- Update your domain's DNS to point to the new hosting
- Cancel your Hands Free Sites subscription
What about my domain?
If you migrated your DNS to Hands Free Sites, you'll need to update your name servers to point to your new hosting provider. Your domain registration (at your registrar) stays yours regardless.
Compatibility
Your exported files work with:
- Any static hosting provider (Netlify, Vercel, GitHub Pages, etc.)
- Any traditional web host (GoDaddy, Bluehost, SiteGround, etc.)
- Amazon S3 / CloudFront (same infrastructure we use)
- Your own server
No special tools or software required. Just standard web files.
